I can identify with so much of what you have written here. Even though I had seen my mother in law struggle with Alzheimers I did not identify the symptoms of dementia when my own mother started to exhibit them. Living away at a distance of over 100 miles probably didn't help but the signs were there and I missed them. Our crisis point was a stroke and, as you say, we would probably have arrived at the same point but you/I can't help but wonder if help obtained sooner couldn't have stopped/slowed some of it.
